A heartfelt lesson on staying true to yourself on your Wedding Day.
Once upon a time, a close friend of mine got married. When I first saw her walking down the aisle, I nearly didn't recognise her.
For the ten years that I had known her, she had been a laid-back, low-maintenance type of girl. She occasionally had her hair colored but wasn't much of an “appointments” sort of person… until the week of her wedding! I had never seen her use gradual tan, let alone have a spray tan, but there she was looking distinctly more bronzed than usual. Her hair, usually a honey blonde, had turned almost platinum, and this day-to-day barefaced girl was wearing a full face of glam, complete with lash extensions. Yes, she looked beautiful, but did she look like herself? No!
She had done what a lot of brides fall victim to: she let herself be swept up in the “should do’s.” Despite being a very low-key person, she had naively followed the advice of the beauty professionals around her and forgot about who she was and what she liked. Now, with all this being said, this would have been fine if she had decided this was the person she was going to be, but no. The month after the wedding, she was back to her usual low-key self with a touch of lip balm and her usual hair tones.
For one day only, she turned into this other person—the person she thought she should look like. She has forever stuck in my head as an example of how you should let your personality lead your decisions when it comes to how you look on your wedding day, not trends or other voices. We now look back at those pictures and have a laugh. Even her children don't recognize her.
Staying true to yourself in Wedding Hair and Makeup
This story has always been at the back of my mind when it comes to my business and my approach to makeup. Although I will always give my clients advice and help when it is needed, I also want to make sure that they still look and feel like themselves when they walk down that aisle. Trends come and go and instantly put an age on an image or look, but if you stay true to your personality, your wedding photos will always be a solid representation of you and last a lifetime.
When you choose a look that reflects your personality, you’ll feel more authentic and comfortable. This confidence will shine through, making you look and feel radiant and allowing you to enjoy your day without feeling self-conscious or out of character.
Tips for choosing Wedding Hair and Makeup styles
Stay True to Your Style: While Pinterest and other social media are great for ideas, don't allow yourself to be carried away by certain looks if they are not within your usual style. Yes, a red lip looks amazing, but is it practical for a day of eating, drinking, hugging, and kissing?
Focus on What Makes You Feel Beautiful: By focusing on what makes you feel beautiful and true to yourself, your wedding hair and makeup will not only enhance your appearance but also make your special day even more enjoyable and memorable.
Pre-Trial Questionnaire: My pre-trial questionnaire is designed to allow my clients to think about areas that might not have been considered and ask questions about how they usually wear their hair and makeup, as well as what makes them feel the most confident and comfortable daily.
Trial Run Discussions: At the trial, we discuss everyday preferences and how to elevate them to make you look and feel your very best. I always encourage clients to wear their hair and makeup for as long as possible and seek opinions from those who see them often and know them well.
Source Inspiration from Similar Features: I recommend that clients source inspiration pictures and ideas from my Instagram and look for images where the person has similar features to themselves.
Main Takeaways
Don’t Feel Pressured: Don’t feel pressured into having a certain look for your wedding day hair and makeup if it’s quite far from your usual style.
